Sketch app is by far the most demanded tool among interface designers. The biggest advantage Sketch provides to its users is a simple and clear functionality. Marvel offers to create unlimited projects for free with commenting on your first 3 projects. InVision

 

It is a free tool for creating interactive prototypes. InVision got the popularity since it enables to import files easily files from Sketch or Photoshop and build animated design. Interactive prototype in InVision looks like the real-life project because designers can link the pages simulating the usage of a real website or mobile app. Moreover, InVision helps to improve feedback process allowing to provide comments right on a prototype.

Sometimes we can’t decide which font of the two chosen suits better. Typetester is a quick solution helping to test and compare fonts. Fonts can be chosen from different sources such as Google fonts or Apple Mac defaults and tested by adjustment of their size, alignment, as well as with customized text and backgrounds.

Free Icon Maker

 

If you don’t like any of the icons found on the Web you can make them by yourself. Icons can be created in one of the visual editors such as Sketch, Illustrator, and Figma, or you can apply some free web-based tools. Free Icon Maker allows for creating and editing icons online. When you register there, you are free to use all the features such as downloading icons from the SVG files to modify them in this tool.

 

IconJar

 

Designers often download hundreds of icon packs and then it becomes hard to find the right one. IconJar is an effective organizer providing folders for specific icons. For example, if you need to find a “home” icon, you can search for it by the name and the tool will show you the icons from all sets. IconJar is available only for MacOS but soon there may be a Windows version. The program is paid but it has a free trial.

Trello

 

Our personal preference for projects monitoring as well as in-studio information flow is Trello. This tool is simple, effective, clear and intuitive. This tool for communication provides clear systems of boards and cards which have a gear deal of features. It makes possible to split any task into sprints and enables to carry out the project providing constant updates and presenting images. It is easy to set deadlines (due-dates), delegate specific tasks to specific people, create checklists and mark out the most important and urgent tasks. What is flat design?

 

Let’s start with the terminology. Today, the term «flat design» is applied to graphics for numerous purposes and tasks which have common stylistic features. Flat design is the direction which found its broad and diverse expression on digital art and is famous for the minimalistic and concise use of visual expressive means. Nowadays the term is widely used as the opposite to «rich design» due to harmonic simplicity taken as the basis of this design approach. It gets a bit more difficult in flat which is rather limited in expressive means and volumes than other styles. Yet, difficult doesn’t mean impossible.

— Step away from the simple geometrization of shapes. Take your sketchbook and a pencil and rough out quick sketches by hand. The sketch will take up the minimum of time comparing to creating a digital picture. Moreover, it will help to quickly find bold lines as well as to interesting movements or poses for a character. You can also add rhythm to the composition with scaling the elements or color and tone accents.

— Having decided on the composition, imagine how the scene would look from different angles: in the perspective with the third convergence point, through a fish-eye lense, from a 3-year-old’ viewpoint or in contrary how a super tall basketball player would see it. — Apply original metaphors which will help to share the idea behind the illustration. Don’t just catch the first images that come to mind: the risk is high that it will be widespread and won’t look original enough to be really eye-catchy.

Keep up the tone contrast of all the composition: to check the correctness of the chosen tones, view the illustration in black-and-white mode — it should stay contrast and well-read.

Usage of textures adds the vividness to the picture, contributes individuality and effect of “hand-made”. Also, it will soften the vector images.

Textures may imitate:

  • real physical materials and details (such as scratches or scuff marks)
  • geometric details (lines, stripes, dots)
  • hand-made stuff with not ideally even live lines

Prioritize the tasks

 

Creating your personal to-do list may become a problem when you have loads of tasks to accomplish. Of course, all the assignments given to us by our clients or bosses are urgent and all of them are usually marked as “to do as soon as possible” but we’re humans and it’s impossible for us to do lots of tasks at once. That’s why you need to think out the details and prioritize the important assignments. To set the priorities effectively, it can be good to answer to yourself objectively which project needs to be finished today and which can wait a bit more.

 

However, if you have a creative job, it’s not always possible to stick to your plan and accomplish the tasks in the right order. The artistic job heavily depends on inspiration and its absence can stop the whole process. In this case, creative people are recommended to have a fallback meaning the next project in the priorities. Switching to another kind of work can have the positive effect to your mind and creativity.

 

Eliminate distractions

 

If you’re a designer, a writer or an illustrator, your job includes using the Internet, full-time or partly. Of course, the net is the major source of useful information, but on the other hand, it is also the spring of distractions such as social networks and entertaining websites. Interfering the creative process, you can’t concentrate completely on the task meaning you are not able to do the job properly. Certainly, it is hard to eliminate all the web distractions since we need to check our emails or contact the clients, still, we don’t need to be online for 24 hours. In most cases, you can choose the certain time for this part of daily routine like 10 a.m and 6 p.m. and that is enough to keep up with the things going on and stay in touch with the customers.

Track the time

 

It is said that happiness takes no account of time. Nevertheless, any project has its deadline and we have to fit it, so the count of time does matter here. To be more productive, it’s advisable to establish your own mini-deadlines for the tasks. For example, the task number one should be ready at 11.20 a.m, the next should be done at 13.00 p.m. Try to estimate the time needed for the specific assignment more objectively, do not overestimate yourself. Having a detailed schedule, you organize your time in the most efficient way and prevent your work from dragging on. Also, this helps your mind stay focused on what should be done right here and now.

 

Stop procrastinating

 

The majority of us constantly postpone our duties for a particular reason. However, sometimes it may turn into the chronic procrastinating when we do anything but work. This can’t bring any good to either you or your clients, so something has to be done about it. Here are several pieces of advice on how to reduce the procrastination in the workflow.

 

Don’t push yourself. Negative emotions never help. While you’re biting yourself for the moments of procrastination, you are not able to start work. So, the first step to take is to calm down and understand that everyone is keen to procrastinate. There’s nothing wrong with you.

 

Find out the reason. Every time we postpone tasks there is a reason standing behind it. So, when you feel like procrastinating you need to ask yourself why you are doing it. Is the task too boring, or complicated, or unclear for you? Finding a reason, you’ll be able to find the solution.

 

Split big projects into small steps. Consistently, when we have a big project ahead, it may seem a heavy burden which cannot be accomplished anytime soon. That’s why, it is always a good idea to split the project into small, clear, and simple tasks. You can also talk this through with the client and set the mini-deadlines which will definitely improve your workflow.

 

Stay focused. Multi-tasking has become a part of the routine for many of us a long time ago, but only a few people learned how to deal with it effectively. We often switch from one task to another, and as a result, nothing is done properly. Try to stay focused on one task at the time, so you could perform it as good as you can. Shifting to the other activity is effective only in case you are totally stuck and have no idea where to move next.

Be good, not perfect

 

Someone may say that perfectionism never hurts but it’s not completely true. When you constantly work under deadlines, the desire to make everything perfect may play a joke with you. Trying to avoid the smallest mistakes at the certain stage of your work, you lose the time reserved for the next steps. And when the deadline comes, you realize that you have 80% of a perfect design, while the client expected the fully accomplished work. To avoid such a situation, try not to get obsessed with the smallest details that are not vital for the task. Remember that you can always polish everything later if you need.

 

Don’t forget to enjoy your life

 

Creative job demands the creative energy, but the endless projects, meetings, brainstorming, and other work routines can make us tired no matter how much we love our job. It’s necessary to include time for relaxing into your schedule. An evening with your friends or in the gym can charge you with the positive energy and inspire you to do something new and wonderful. So, don’t forget to find the opportunity of having a good time.

In our user-centered world, people’s requirements are extremely high and companies have no other option than trying to give only the best products to them. But how can the companies define if their product responds to the requirements of its target audience and make sure it’ll be successful? Who’s responsible for this key part of the workflow? The answer is a product manager.

 

Even though product management is a core part of the workflow in many companies, meaning behind this position can get people confused. First of all, it may be difficult to understand the essence of the “product” part. We are used to seeing “products” as something that is sold to people, so product managers may be confused with merchandiser, sales manager or other person responsible for purchases. Moreover, it may be mistaken for a job of project manager because sometimes they do have similar responsibilities. Today, in our article, we’ll clear up the essence of a product manager and their role in the workflow of web and mobile development and design companies.

Who’s a product manager?

 

Typically, it is a person who is in charge of the general success of the product. A product manager makes sure that all aspects including business model, positioning, branding, and marketing of the product come together and, what’s more importantly, they ensure it meets users’ needs. Their primary concern is the target audience of the product, the business needs and measurement of the future success.

 

However, the role of product management varies depending on a size and a type of a company. For the web and mobile companies, a product manager is the one who builds the extensive network of relationships between customers and all the parts of the team including development, design and marketing departments to identify the goals, roadmaps and the requirements for the product. Their responsibilities include setting the strategy, the communication with customers, and defining the set of basic features. The main objective of a product manager is to create a product that users will love.

It is sometimes thought that these two jobs are identical: they can be mistaken because people don’t see the differences between a product and a project. Let’s figure it out. A product is what a company provides to the users and it doesn’t matter if it’s a tangible thing or a service that they provide such as design. And, speaking of a project we usually mean a plan that includes work stages, expected outcome, responsible parties, fixed terms and budget. The project is accomplished when the outcome is provided, while the product keeps existing (hopefully) far long after the project is complete. In many cases, product is the result obtained from a particular project.

According to this, we can say that the prior objective of a project manager is managing the team of specialists to complete all the stages of the project on time and under budget, while a product manager aims at managing and creating the competitive product that will work after the project is complete.

In this way, you can build trustworthy relationships with your clients and create the competitive product. Certainly, in some companies, these are the responsibilities of project managers. Nevertheless, a product manager knows more about the specific features of the product, that’s why it may be more effective if the reports on the product development (not a project’s progress) are made by product managers.

The middle level of processing is the behavioral level and that’s actually where most of our stuff gets done. Visceral is subconscious, you’re unaware of it. Behavioral is subconscious, you’re unaware of it.Almost everything we do is subconscious. I’m walking around the stage — I’m not attending to the control of my legs. I’m doing a lot; most of my talk is subconscious; it has been rehearsed and thought about a lot. Most of what we do is subconscious. Automatic behavior — skilled behavior — is subconscious, controlled by the behavioral side. And behavioral design is all about feeling in control,which includes usability, understanding — but also the feel and heft.

 

Emotion is all about acting; emotion is really about acting. It’s being safe in the world. Cognition is about understanding the world, emotion is about interpreting it — saying good, bad, safe, dangerous, and getting us ready to act, which is why the muscles tense or relax. And that’s why we can tell the emotion of somebody else — because their muscles are acting, subconsciously, except that we’ve evolved to make the facial muscles really rich with emotion.

 

 

James Patten: The best computer interface? Maybe … your hands

 

“The computer is an incredibly powerful means of creative expression,” says designer and TED Fellow James Patten. But right now, we interact with computers, mainly, by typing and tapping. Why do we get used to everyday things? Well as human beings, we have limited brain power. And so our brains encode the everyday things we do into habits so we can free up space to learn new things. It’s a process called habituation and it’s one of the most basic ways, as humans, we learn.

 

My first tip is to look broader. You see, when you’re tackling a problem, sometimes, there are a lot of steps that lead up to that problem. And sometimes, a lot of steps after it. If you can take a step back and look broader, maybe you can change some of those boxes before the problem. Maybe you can combine them. Maybe you can remove them altogether to make that better.

 

Our challenge is to wake up each day and say, «How can I experience the world better?»

 

Chris Urmson: How a driverless car sees the road

 

Statistically, the least reliable part of the car is … the driver. Chris Urmson heads up Google’s driverless car program, one of several efforts to remove humans from the driver’s seat. The eye is exquisitely sensitive to patterns in variations in color, shape and pattern. It loves them, and it calls them beautiful. It’s the language of the eye. If you combine the language of the eye with the language of the mind, which is about words and numbers and concepts, you start speaking two languages simultaneously, each enhancing the other. So, you have the eye, and then you drop in the concepts. And that whole thing — it’s two languages both working at the same time.

Form is function. It informs, it tells us, it supplies us answers before we’ve even thought about it. And so I’ve stopped using words like «form,» and I’ve stopped using words like «function» as a designer. What I try to pursue now is the emotional functionality of things. Because if I can get that right, I can make them wonderful, and I can make them repeatedly wonderful.

Most of the designers working in Tubik Studio have tried in practice both workstyles which are typical for today’s designers in the sphere of web, app and branding design: most started their path as freelancers before getting into team. So, using the advantage of real life experience we would like to discuss high and low sides of freelance and work in the studio or agency. Obviously, a lot of things have already been discussed in numerous articles over this topic, but, perhaps, our thoughts can also become useful for those who are considering the theme.

No doubt, due to the new technological horizons couple of decades ago freelance became the new and broad perspective of organizing work routine. It opened wide opportunities for those talented people who could not leave their homes, such as for example disabled or parents of babies and toddlers. This kind of workstyle brought easy solutions for a lot of problems and let the people realize their abilities against all the odds, so very soon it was taken over and improved by huge number of professionals in different spheres. The accents moved a bit: a lot of people made the choice of freelancing not because they didn’t need to go to an office but first of all because they could work for themselves and be the only people responsible for their own decisions, choosing the partners or customers and depending on themselves. In Ukraine, where Tubik Studio is based, there are no many places where you can study to become a UI/UX designer. Although, starting from nowhere about two years ago, nowadays Sergey is certain that the only thing you need to become a professional in this field is desire and ability to work hard. On the one hand, he says, it’s much easier now than a decade or even five years ago considering that today there’s a huge number of resources such as e-books and sites, guides and manuals, social networks and professional platforms giving a designer the successful start. On the other hand, it’s complicated and hard as well as any other job, which is creative, full of responsibilities, interactive and developing in a highly competitive sphere. You should have no illusions; you should just work, study and improve yourself all the time.

He doesn’t remember himself not drawing, sketching, painting — creating images of all kinds and sizes. Today as well, he starts the work on any project with a pencil in his hand. Although technologies are totally fantastic today, providing a designer with plenty of tools and software, creating a concept, he prefers to work out the idea by hand and soul and only then make it powerful with technologies. Moreover, being asked to give the advice for beginners in the field of Web/UI/UX design, he says that the old school shouldn’t be neglected: if you improve your skills of drawing and painting by hand, no doubt, that is going to help you in digital art.
