That pitch is mostly wrong. A one-page website can be harder to design well than a ten-page site, because you’ve got one shot to hold attention, one URL to rank, and nowhere to hide a weak section. If you’re choosing single-page web design because it sounds easier, choose something else. If you’re choosing it because the project genuinely fits—portfolio, product launch, event page—here’s what actually works, backed by things you can go check yourself.

What a Single-Page Site Actually Is

A single-page website loads one HTML document and fakes navigation with anchor links, so clicking “About”, for example, just scrolls you to a div lower on the same page. That’s the entire mechanism. No new page load, no new URL in most implementations—everything lives on one address. Studio portfolios love this format, and so do event pages, single-product landing pages, and resumes. Stripe’s original 2011 homepage ran this way. So did countless Kickstarter campaign pages, which remain a decent case study in one-page conversion design because the entire pitch—video, tiers, FAQ, pledge button—has to work as one continuous argument.

Babysitting service

The SEO Problem Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud

Here’s the part single-page website tutorials tend to skip: you’re competing for search rankings with one URL instead of many. A five-page site can rank for five different keyword clusters. A one-pager gets one shot, one title tag, one meta description, and has to cram every topic into a single crawlable document. Plus, Google’s own guidance on page experience rewards distinct, well-structured URLs for distinct topics, so a bakery selling both wedding cakes and coffee subscriptions on one scrolling page ends up fighting itself for search visibility.

There’s also a Google Analytics quirk worth knowing: single-page sites often show artificially high bounce rates, because GA historically counted a session with no second pageview as a bounce—even if the visitor scrolled the whole page, read everything, and clicked your contact link. Set up scroll-depth or engaged-time tracking before you panic over that number.

Tasty Burger App

Sectioning: Give People Something to Land On

If you’re building a one-page layout, treat it like a chaptered document, not a wall of text. You can test it yourself: scroll your current draft with the browser zoomed out to 50%. If you can’t tell where one section ends and the next begins from that zoomed-out view, your visual hierarchy needs another pass.

Visual Hierarchy Has Actual Research Behind It

Jakob Nielsen’s Nielsen Norman Group ran an eye-tracking study back in 2006 tracking how people read web content, and it’s the origin of the F-pattern claim that gets repeated everywhere without citation. Text-heavy pages get scanned in a rough F shape—top line fully read, then attention drops off toward the right as the eye moves down. Visual, image-forward layouts tend toward a Z-pattern instead: top-left to top-right, diagonal down to bottom-left, across to bottom-right. A single-page site usually needs both, section by section, because you’re mixing a text-heavy FAQ block with an image-heavy hero. Use size, color, and negative space to signal which pattern applies where, and don’t fill every inch. A widely cited Deloitte study found that shaving just 0.1 seconds off mobile load time measurably lifted conversion rates for retail sites, so a parallax hero that adds even a second of load time is a real cost, not an aesthetic footnote.

Parallax also tends to perform badly on mobile scroll, where the effect either lags visibly or gets disabled outright by the browser to save battery. A sticky nav bar with anchor links solves most of it—keep it slim, keep it visible, and make sure each link actually jumps to a labeled section rather than a vague midpoint. Add a back-to-top button once your page passes roughly three screen-heights of scroll; on pages shorter than that, most users will just scroll back up manually and won’t need it. Test your anchor links on an actual phone, not just in browser dev tools—mobile URL bars and sticky headers routinely eat the top 60-80 pixels of the target section, so your “Contact” link can jump users to a blank strip above the heading they wanted.

One Page Deserves One Job

Single-page sites work best with a single conversion goal, not five competing ones. Decide before you design whether the page exists to collect emails, sell one product, or book one call, then make that button the highest-contrast element on every section, not just the top. If your one-pager currently has a newsletter signup, a demo request, and a “buy now” button competing for the same scroll, pick one and demote the rest to text links.

A single-page website is a bet that your story is tight enough to survive one continuous scroll.
